That little black dress that you used to wear when you were “thin” no longer fits you now because you’re overburdened with responsibilities, making it difficult for you to focus on yourself. I’ve been there and I know what it feels like to suck in your guts to a point of explosion just to zip that favourite jeans! Being a stay-at-home mother, I felt my options were limited when it came to fitness. I couldn’t dare to show my bulgy self in gyms and other fitness classes because I was too afraid of the reaction – you know, like a pod among peas!

I began losing interest in everything because as soon as I wear anything special, I turn to look at myself in the mirror and there it was….watching me back. The only thing I wished then was, “Can I just magically make it disappear, just for tonight?” but I’m no Cinderella and this isn’t a fairy tale, so after wishing for the impossible, I’d head out to the front porch to drink a cup of coffee – just a way to get my mind of it. I’d see many women on the road, jogging, walking, talking, showing off…heck even yoga’ing! That’s when it hit me. The change of a lifetime will only begin…after I finish my tasty coffee! Hey, I’m a woman and I need some coffee!

The Longer the Belt the Shorter the Life

We all know that the more you eat, the bigger you get, and the bigger you get the weirder you feel about yourself. I knew I wasn’t alone, but I desperately needed to get the flabs off. At a recent health fair, I saw and heard this really fit woman explaining the dangers of extra flab. My heart wanted to hear it, but my brain, which was guilty, began jumping around. It happens, and it’s not just a coincidence. When you know you’re wrong about something, you just want to get away from it as far as possible so you don’t feel guiltier than you already are! So I stood there listening and I realized that the longer the belt, the shorter the life.

The flabs that we’ve got are called visceral fat; they produce more stress hormones in our bodies that in turn affect our insulin levels. The worst part is that not only would we be overweight, we would also be looking at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart diseases. No way did I want to die with heart diseases and being a coffee addict, I had to do something about my weight so I don’t have to say bye-bye to my coffee rounds. Now I’m an impatient one…I like my details like I like my man – straight and to the point! So I made my way in and asked the lady, “I’ve been trying for months, this flab is stubborn. It just won’t go away. What do you have to say about this? Can I get it off?

Never Stop Moving

Wait, what? Yes, that’s what she said – never stop moving! So these days I’m grooving to music while I do my chores and I find it fun actually! I’ve been doing it for a few months now and I can definitely see the difference. The back-pain is gone, my migraines have reduced and I feel more flexible. You can pick any kind of music you like and just groove with it while you cook, wash, or dust!

Eat Proteins like a Boss

Proteins are necessary, especially if you want to lose weight. So these days my menu has more protein than that of a restaurant! And guess what, we know how we cook, so I add very less oil to whatever I cook to speed up the fat loss process.

Say No to Saturated and Yes to Polyunsaturated Stuff

Well this is a surprise! For as long as I remember, my pesky neighbour told me not to eat nuts, seeds and fish because they’ll make me gain more weight. The lady in the health fair told me exactly the opposite. So here’s the deal, a handful of nuts or seeds are healthy and will make your fats go away.

A Dose of Vinegar

Now here’s the deal. Add 15 – 30 ml of vinegar to a litre of water and drink it the whole day. Remember to brush your teeth or gargle soon after because vinegar can weaken the teeth. Studies have shown that those who drink vinegar induced water lose stubborn belly fat. I tried and it worked!

Yoga, Aerobics, Broga Exercise

Don’t do all this together! Choose something you’re comfortable with and do it regularly for at least 60 minutes. Walking also helps, so brisk walk every day for 30 minutes in addition to any form of exercise you’re most comfortable with. I do the yoga and I walk daily, results? MIND BLOWING!

Sleep for Weight Loss Even on Weekends!

Ah, this is my favourite part! You’ve got to sleep at least 8 hours a day to decrease the production of excess insulin. Studies have revealed that those who sleep for 5 hours or less every night will have flabs. So what’s the plan? Sleep on time, even on weekends and tell the rest of your family to give you some peace!

Fibre and Green Tea, Please!

Pack up on these! The more fibre you eat the faster your weight loss and the more green tea you have the better chances that stubborn fat will leave you forever! Now I have an early coffee after which I have the green tea and of course it doesn’t taste as good, but hey, if it’s going to shed the fat, so be it!

My Results 8 Months Later…

I know you want to read this part, everyone does here’s what I experienced in the first 8 months of this routine. First, the back-pain disappeared, then the migraine followed by less hair fall and some hair growth! My belly fat, I can’t say I’ve got 4 or 6-packs, but at least the flab has gone down significantly. I know this because I no longer have to suck my guts to zip my jeans! I’ve been following this and will keep following until I reach my ideal weight. Now that’s how you keep that stubborn fat away!

The human body is so adaptable that we can’t even start to think about its greatness. Not a single person realized that a 24 year old woman was missing the most important part of her brain, the cerebellum, until she was hospitalized in the Chinese PLA General Hospital of Jinan Military Area Command in Shandong Province. She complained on frequent dizziness and nausea. According to the woman, she had trouble walking steadily for most of her life and based on what her mother stated, she began walking at the age of seven and started speaking clearly at the age of six. When the doctors did a CAT scan, they immediately found the root cause of her problem – her brain was missing the cerebellum.

The Importance of Cerebellum

Often known as the little brain, the cerebellum is situated below the two brain hemispheres. Although it represents 10% of the entire brain’s volume, it contains 50% its neurons. The woman, who has the entire cerebellum missing, has joined a selected group of just nine people who suffer from the same health condition. According to the doctors, this health disorder hardly affects individuals simply because they don’t survive long enough to face the consequences of a missing cerebellum. One of the doctors mentioned that only through an autopsy do they discover the entire cerebellum missing, but the woman’s case was different.

The main task of the cerebellum is to control voluntary movements and balance, it also helps individuals to speak and learn motor skills. Problems in the cerebellum can cause severe mental impairment, movement disorders, epilepsy as well as a dangerous accumulation of fluid in the brain. But this woman’s case was different; she only suffered mild to moderate motor deficiency and slight speech problems. According to the doctors, these effects are “less than would be expected” and state that her case highlights the outstanding adaptability of the human brain. According to Mario Manto, a researcher at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, “These rare cases are interesting to understand how the brain circuitry works and compensates for missing parts.”

The moment I found out that I was on the verge of becoming bald, I started panicking like a little girl. My hair, oh the days when it used to sway with the wind, my thick hair, the only part of me that most people envied, was now the volume similarly matching a rat’s tail. What happened?! Pregnancy can’t be the reason I knew, because I hardly saw any other women suffering the bald-syndrome. Back to my rant…my hair was falling and I knew I had to do something about it because I couldn’t imagine losing my beautiful locks of nothingness now. I tried all hair growth products, even the expensive ones, if you know what I mean, but it didn’t help.

Instead it gave me such an itchy scalp that I nearly looked like some uncivilized human snapped back from the Stone Age. I asked a few friends, who all complained about the effects of hard-water. In case you didn’t know, hard-water i.e. water with some amount of salt inside, will give you hair fall. I tried using a water softener, but it didn’t help. I couldn’t bear to see my hair falling and that’s when light shone upon a window sill…I saw a small bottle with butterflies rotating around it…I started to reach to it and snapped. That was it. I rushed to my neighbour who sparingly applied something from that small bottle to her hair and I said, “What is that?”

Essential Oils for Hair Growth

These are highly concentrated oils from plant materials that are accumulated through a process of distillation. They’re so strong, they can burn the skin if applied directly, so they must be diluted with carrier oils such as almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut or apricot kernel oil before application. The best essential oils for stimulating hair growth are rosemary, lavender, thyme and clary sage. Because we like to keep things simple and straight to the point, let’s get down to the aromatic details.

Step 1

What is your favourite carrier oil? Almond, jojoba, coconut or apricot kernel? Pick one and then choose your favourite essential oil. To every fluid ounce of carrier oil, add 6 drops of essential oils i.e. if you have a 4.0z bottle of almond oil, add 24 drops of essential oil to it. Shake well. I use almond and rosemary!

Step 2

Take a bowl and mix your concoction i.e. carrier oil and essential oil. Warm it using a double boiler (place the bowl in hot water to warm it up) and keep it ready.

Step 3

Wet your hair with warm water and take a cotton ball, dip it in the oil mixture and rub it gently on your hair roots. Let the oil sit in your hair for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4

After 30 minutes, rinse your hair and use your regular shampoo and conditioner to take the oil out. Now let your hair air dry.

Because essential oils are highly concentrated, test a small area on your skin to see if it causes you any irritation. Usually rosemary, lavender, thyme and clary-sage won’t give you an irritation.

Can you leave the mixture in your hair overnight? Yep you can! Just make sure you cover your pillow case otherwise it will absorb the oil from your hair and you might have to say goodbye to it!

Has It Helped?

Yep, yep! Definitely! Now I’m not saying you’ll wake up to a head full of hair the next morning, that would be weird, but I can say is that hair fall will reduce significantly. Before trying the essential oils, my hair would fall like my personal Niagara Falls, but now it has stopped falling so much, so my advice to you – get that bottle and start brewing!

An Open Letter To My Hair – Before Essential Oils…(Credited to Steve!)

Dear Hair,

Hey! How are you? Everything’s good down here.

I’ve been pretty busy at work, but it’s fun. The boys are growing up so fast you’d hardly recognize them. Oh, and my folks will be out visiting us soon, so that’ll be nice. You’ll have to forgive me if you already knew this stuff, but I figured you might not be up to date since you’re too busy slowly falling out my #$%^&*& head you ungrateful beings.

I just don’t get it. We’ve been together for as long as I can remember. How can you just throw that all away?! I washed you. I patted you dry. I took you to expensive salons. But I guess that wasn’t good enough, was it? Where did it all go wrong? Just tell me, and I’ll fix it. I can change, I swear! Honestly, I feel like I don’t even know who you are anymore. Do you really think a life down the drain or stuck in some brush is going to be better than what you have with me in my scalp??? I promise you, it won’t be.

But if that’s the way you want it, then fine. But don’t come growing back someday and expect it to be like the old days, because I can’t wait for you forever. Listen, Hair. As hard as this is, I do wish you the best. I’m going to miss you a lot, and I will always deeply cherish the times we shared together.

I hope you find whatever it is you’re looking for.

Okay so you might have been told that breastfeeding will help you lose some weight. A lot of women, who have breastfed their children for over 1 year, still complain of excess fat. Your child is already joining preschool, but you still feel pregnant. Fat isn’t good. It isn’t attractive. \ So when I gave birth, the elderly in my family used to say, “Don’t worry, you’ll get back in shape”, “Breastfeed and you’ll lose weight”, “Eat for your baby, not for yourself!” okay I had had enough. I had to get back in shape and I had to do it quick. My fat belly made me look obese and my clothes…well let’s just say, nothing fit. I left behind myths and superstitions and began communicating with other women about losing pregnancy fat. Here are 10 amazing techniques to become slim again!

Befriend the Stairs

Susan lost 25 pounds in 4 months!

“When my baby was born, I kept his diaper changing supplies downstairs with me so my body can recover from labour. When I healed, I moved the diaper station to the second floor so every time I needed to change the diaper; I had to climb two floors to the nursery. This helped me burn lots of unwanted calories!”

Exercise with Your Baby

Samantha lost 30 pounds in 5-6 months

“Because my baby was born in winter, I couldn’t do much outside so I established a routine where I danced around with my baby every day by playing my favourite song for at least 45 minutes! After the ‘dancexercise’ we would take a nice shower and be ready for papa’s arrival!”

Walk it Off

Tracy lost 35 pounds in 19 months

“I made it a routine to take my baby out for a walk every single day for at least 15 minutes; whether it was down the street, around the backyard, at the grocery store or at the mall. My baby enjoyed the ride so we would sometimes stroll for an hour a day, depending on how long we were both comfortable!”

It is unfortunate that sometimes, when a mishap or personal injuries happen, a grown-up is not available, however there are basic first aid procedures that all kids should learn that if mastered correctly can save the day for themselves as well as others. This however does not mean that a kid can examine and tend to a critical health situation in the same way as an adult, yet kids can often implement basic first aid that makes a huge impact until proper medical care can be received.

Basic first aid remedies all children must know, has to be geared toward the common types of accidents which occur constantly in the life of a proactive child, along with a few potential life-saving strategies which are reasonably easy to understand. However, please keep in mind that the different forms of basic first aid all kids need to know must be tailored to fit an individual child’s maturity level and intelligence.

For instance, a young child who is 6 or 7 years old may be too young to grasp the understanding of when and how to apply CPR to an injured individual, while most teenagers are quite capable of rescuing a life in this manner. First aid all children ought to know, when it comes to younger children, must stick to addressing bruises, minor cuts and burns, and sprains. Going too heavily into detail with small kids only serves to baffle them, raising the possibility that they may actually make the matter more serious.

As it applies to basic first aid all kids must know, perhaps the most important lesson is to get help and adult involvement in the fastest manner probable any time a serious injury happens. Basic first aid all older kids should be aware of could be more complex and detailed, addressing more serious health conditions. Various forms of resuscitation, splinting brittle bones, and tending to a person who is experiencing shock due to a terrible injury are all aspects of first aid that teens can easily digest and learn with a little basic knowledge.

Lastly, basic first aid all children should know is how to treat a friend or family member they have regular contact with, who has a chronic or life-threatening condition. Something as simple as an 8 year old placing a nitroglycerin tablet in the mouth of a grandparent who is going through a heart attack needs no knowledge over and above a very rudimentary understanding, and this tip is served as the first tip that all children must know.

People are exposed to multiple carcinogenic agents on a daily basis due to modern lifestyle, according to Natural News. Health professionals are worried about the soaring rates of cancer. Dietitians have come up with a list of foods which cannot be ignored for a person to maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  1. Turmeric: Tumeric contains the phytonutrient, curcumin which has been found out to be anti-inflammatory and cancer inhibiting.
  2. Garlic: Garlic contains about 200 biologically active compounds that contain amino-acids, cysteine and glutathione. These compounds have protective functions against cancer formation and growth. For garlic to be effective, it should be eaten raw, lightly fried with vegetables or boiled in soups.
  3. Spinach: Spinach is a green leafy vegetable reputed for increasing body energy and power. It is rich in chlorophyll and carotene which makes it an anti-cancer food. It is also rich in vitamins, iron, folic acids and minerals as well as the antioxidant coenzyme which has anti-aging properties.
  4. Cruciferous vegetables: These vegetables include kale, cabbage, broccoli, cress, mustard, cauliflower, Brussels and radish. They are beneficial because they contain glucosinolates and phytonutrients which detoxify certain carcinogens and lower the risk of colon cancer.

These days’ newspapers are becoming extinct like the dinosaurs! A long time ago, when people wanted to know about the happenings around the world, they used to double-step to a nearby local convenience store to buy a very valuable thing – the newspaper! Today things are different – almost everyone has a smartphone. Whatever you need to know is right there…in your pocket. The moment you switch on the phone, and if you’ve set it up accordingly, you get to see latest news, breaking news, entertainment and what not. Some are going to be reading this article on their mobile devices too! When it comes to bookworms, they’ve got readers.

E-reading is slowly becoming a trend and people are starting to love it. What’s interesting is that the human brain processes images differently i.e. digital reading process is different from paper reading process. According to Mike Rosenwald, the brain jumps around too much on the page you’re reading an actual book. The brain doesn’t settle down and it was treating the book like a Twitter newsfeed! Interestingly, neuroscience has revealed that humans do, in fact, use different parts of their brain when reading a paper or when reading from a screen.

The bad news is that the more you read from a screen, the more unsettled your brain becomes when you read from a piece of paper. According to managing editor and host of WNYC’s New Tech City, Manoush Zomorodi, “They call it a ‘bi-literate’ brain. The problem is that many of us have adapted to reading online just too well. And if you don’t use the deep reading part of your brain, you lose the deep reading part of your brain.” As stated by Zomorodi, deep reading is when we “immerse ourselves in a novel or read a mortgage document. Dense text that we really want to understand requires deep reading, and on the internet we don’t do that.”

Digital reading and distractions have even puzzled and grabbed the attention of the director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, Maryanne Wolf, who said, “I don’t worry that we’ll become dumb because of the Internet,” Wolf says, “but I worry we will not use our most preciously acquired deep reading processes because we’re just given too much stimulation. That’s, I think, the nub of the problem.” As reported by Zoromodi, in order to keep the reading part of the brain alive and healthy, she and Wolf suggest that each person should take some time out every day to deep read on paper.

According to Wolf, it is extremely important that parents take the initiative to teach their kids, who’re gradually growing up in a digital world, how to deep read on paper by providing them with more books instead of a collection of digital books. Wolf was also quoted stating that, “I think the evidence someday will be able to show us that what we’re after is a discerning ‘bi-literate’ brain. That’s going to take some wisdom on our part.”

As praised by many researchers and marketers that breakfast increases metabolism controls hunger, help calorie conscious people and improves thinking abilities.Even though breakfast has been highlighted for its prominent benefits, there are warnings for the excess concentration on it.

A recent study conducted over a period of 16 weeks suggested that obese and fat adults were not affected by not having breakfast. This raised serious concerns over the most popular culture of “Breakfast helps loose weight” that breakfast has been promoted through.

As explained by Allison, this study has no validity towards the type of food eaten at breakfast or on those who are underweight. Children as well are not facilitated from this study which only creates a specific outcome.

Some expert nutritionists still are adamant over the fact that breakfast helps weight-loss and creates a balances human functioning in the morning, so you better not get too quirky about the findings from the study.

A registered dietitian in Chicago says that in the UAB study they did not look on how much the people were eating in their breakfast and had no control over their nutrition’s. The study also failed to address the connection between weights and focus levels during tasks; this portrays the limitations the study presented and explained the controlled information that has been forwarded to people.

University of Minnesota School of Public Health conducted a research in 2008 and the researchers involved in that study were able to deduce that people who had been having breakfast regularly for the past 5 years had a higher tendency of loosing weight, hence showing the direct relation of breakfast and weight-loss. This relation is also proved by other studies that has similar results; these studies are known to be conducted over a very large period of time.

Reducing the risk of metabolic conditions, including diabetes was helped greatly by consistent breakfast intake. This was declared by a study conducted in 2013.

Some small experimental studies and initial studies also have mentioned the possibility of more research needed on the breakfast message that is displayed everywhere. No one for sure can say that there is a definite outcome the regular intake of breakfast.

Breakfast is no doubt an opportunity for kids and teenagers to have a fresh start with adequate nutrition’s and diet. Since many kids these days are known to be highly unfit due to excess junk draining their digestive system. The tables might have been shifted towards the possibility of breakfast not being as effective in weight loss, but it is still widely considered as the most important meal of the day.

The National Weight Control Registry shows that over 90% of the success weight loss stories include daily and healthy breakfast. Those who have maintained their weight for a long time are keener and concerned about their breakfast, showing the importance of it as a meal. If researches are now brining in counter-breakfast studies which suggests no link between weight and breakfast, there are numerous theories and studies to prove that there is a link.
