17 American Missionaries kidnapped by gang in Haiti

One of Haiti’s most notorious gangs is suspected of kidnapping 17 American and Canadian missionaries over the weekend, according to a source in the Caribbean country’s security forces.

Authorities suspect the “400 Mawozo” gang kidnapped the missionaries, who included 16 Americans and one Canadian, when they visited an orphanage in Croix des Bouquets, a neighborhood northeast of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Saturday.

While driving from the orphanage to Titanyen, north of Port-au-Prince, gang members halted the car with guns drawn.

The 400 Mawozo gang has grown in power over the last three years, with up to 150 members, and has basically taken control of Croix des Bouquets, according to a source in Haiti’s security forces on Sunday.
