Shakira Could Face 8-Years In Prison, In Tax Evasion Case

According to papers obtained by Reuters, a Spanish prosecutor intends to pursue a maximum of eight years in jail and a $23 million fine against renowned singer Shakira for tax cheating.

The three-time Grammy winner is accused of failing to pay over $15 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014. The singer claims she has already paid the Spanish tax authority around $17.5 million to fulfill her debt.

Nonetheless, a court concluded in July of last year that there was enough “proof of wrongdoing” for the singer, who is the star and EP of NBC’s Dancing With Myself reality show, to stand trial.

While Shakira is Columbian, the prosecutor’s office claims she was “ordinarily living in Spain between 2012 and 2014 and purchased a residence in Barcelona in May 2012.”

Officials claim the residence was not just for the singer, but also for her husband, FC Barcelona player Gerard Pique, and their kid, who was born in Spain in 2013. Last month, the couple announced their separation.
