This week, President Obama is expected to announce the assigning of approximately 3,000 military personnel to help fight Ebola in West Africa – a disease that, if untreated, can wipe out humanity. In support of the efforts, the Pentagon has requested Congress to invest $500 million in overseas contingency costs. A disease that has killed over 2,200 people in several West African countries, Mr President will appear at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to announce the fight against Ebola.

To support the overwhelmed local health care systems and to treat the victims of this dreaded disease, US administration officials stated that they would be providing medical and logistical support as well as boost the number of beds to help the cause. In order to fully support the fight against Ebola, Mr President’s initiative will include training of approximately 500 health care workers every week and establishing 17 health care facilities that feature 100 beds each. This initiative will also require setting up a joint command which will be headquartered in Monrovia, Liberia, to synchronize communication between the US and the international relief efforts.

The officials will also be providing health care kits to families in West Africa, of which, this week, 50,000 kits will be delivered to Liberia from the U.S. Agency for International Development. Furthermore, to train local population on how to handle exposed victims, the officials will be carrying out door to door campaigns to better educate them. The US has taken the initiative because its military has the capacity to set up quarantine camps, therefore the initiation request falls under the jurisdiction if the Pentagon. Because this disease threatens the fragile governments in Africa, the fight against Ebola is, to some extent, considered a national security issue because it could lead to more opportunities for terrorist safe havens in Africa.

According to some sources, the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing with Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey will be held this week. According to numerous health experts, the dreaded disease is expected to kill 10,000 before six months from now, and some experts believe that at least 500,000 deaths may be recorded before the virus has been eliminated. The senior Republican on the Senate’s health committee, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., was quoted stating, “This is an instance where we should be running toward the burning flames with our fireproof suits on. This is an emergency. We need to recognize it, and we need to find and work with other countries in the world that recognize it.”

Have you been suffering from acid reflux? Acid reflux can happen anytime of the day or night, making it miserable for the person to make it through the day without frequent episodes of belch-ridden indigestion, a burning sensation in the throat, and radiating chest pain that is sometimes thought to be a heart attack. Acid reflux is also known as GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease). Acid reflux happens when contents of the stomach back up into the oesophagus, a tube like structure that connects the throat to the stomach.

Chronic GERD can be dangerous because it can erode the walls of the oesophagus leading to painful symptoms. Apart from heartburns, other symptoms may include difficulty in swallowing, dry cough, a hoarse voice, frequent regurgitation and feeling as if there’s a lump in the throat. But according to gastroenterology specialist Dr. Lawrence Cohen, GERD is often caused by poor lifestyle and diet.

Dr. Cohen stated that, “The majority, I dare say, is directed by our habits, by our weight, our eating patterns, the content of our diet, and certain vices like smoking. Those are the things that contribute to excessive reflux.” According to Dr. Cohen the major cause of GERD is obesity. He stated that being overweight especially around the waistline can contribute to the development of acid reflux because stomach acid and content travel faster into the oesophagus due to increased intra-abdominal pressure.

“We can reverse and modify frequency of reflux by looking at those factors of diet and lifestyle,” said Dr. Cohen. “And we can change it from chronic to intermittent to resolved.”Most people eat large, high-fat meals and rarely carry out any energetic activities apart from lying down on a flat surface. This act can create havoc on the oesophageal sphincter which soon becomes a subject of chronic acid reflux.

Something that is important to learn are the positions for breastfeeding. Learning which is the best hold for you and your baby. There are three positions that are most common.

  • Cradle Position. This is one of the most common positions that mothers use when breastfeeding. This position cradles the head of your baby into the crook of your arm. You can hold the baby in your lap, or place a pillow on your lap and then the baby on top of that.
  • Football Hold. This is also called the clutch hold. As the name of the position says, you will hold your baby like a football. Place a pillow on your lap, and hold the baby with her face laying on the pillow placing your nipple in their mouth.
  • Side-Lying Position. This is a position that requires a bed to use. Laying on your side while placing your baby on their side. Position their head at your nipple. With this position it is important to place belly to belly.

One of the most important things to remember when breastfeeding is that no one does it perfect. Everyone has their own style. It is important to ensure that when you are breastfeeding you are comfortable and that it doesn’t hurt. Remember that when it hurts you need to change positions.

Ebola outbreak in West Africa has become a major concern according to the World Health Organization (WHO),after scores of people died due to the Ebola virus. It is believed that the virus originated from Sierra Leone where 14 women who had attended a traditional healer burial near Guinea, were believed to have been infected.

The New York Times has reported that 78 patients who were diagnosed with the virus have been treated in Kenema government hospital in Sierra Leone close to the borders of Liberia and Guinea. The New York Times also reported that Dr W. Ian Lipkin from Columbia University said that it was frightening that a single event catalyzed a whole outbreak in West Africa. Medical experts discovered that the Ebola strain in West Africa was a different strain from the one that had occurred in Central Africa since the mid 1970’s. DrPardi C. Sabeti suspects that the virus might have been circulating in forest animals including apes and bats. She also added that it could also have been circulating in Humans with little or no notice making the strain stronger.

Scientists have come up with current tests which will be used to diagnose Ebola and vaccines will be based on the Central African Strain. However the test might not reveal a clear positive if the patient has a ‘low viral load’ during the initial stages of infection.

Senegal has been affected by the Ebola virus for the first time since its outbreak in July. Statistics show that 1552 people have died from the virus as of August 26, 2014. Affected countries include Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Guinea and Liberia. Liberia has been affected the most with 694 deaths, Sierra Leone 422 deaths, Guinea 430, and Nigeria 6 deaths.

Granted that most Saturdays in the fall are dedicated to apple picking, day hikes and morning jogs, there’s something that has been making rounds in the fitness world. I’m assuming this new phenomenon is inspired by How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson (played by Neil Patrick Harris) – the Broga or ‘bro-yoga’ is a brand new hit intensity yoga class that provides the necessary meditation techniques for mountain climbers along with OMs for multitude of push-ups. Although the class incorporates many of the classic yoga poses, this isn’t your regular Vinyasa flow – it is much more challenging and much, much more fun!

Offered in selected fitness studios, the Broga is a game-changing, rules-smashing blend of the popular yoga style Vinyasa, body-weight based functional movements as well as high intensity interval training. So if you’re looking for results that will blow your mind (and melt your fats) the Broga will offer you benefits beyond that of a regular yoga class. According to fitness experts, the Broga is for those who can’t see (or touch) their toes, but want to train like professional athletes. The Broga begins with upper back mobility and spinal rotation – but don’t confuse this with a boot-camp class! The Broga is sprinkled with lots of other classic yoga poses, but gives you the workout of a lifetime. So if you’re looking for enormous amount of sweat-inducing cardio, the Broga is the way to go!

All high intensity intervals are followed by balancing yoga poses, an avid yoga lover would note that this is much different from a traditional yoga flow class. A standard Broga class runs for 75 minutes incorporating like a hundred push-ups, hours of planks, hip stretches and finally a corpse pose. If this yoga, sorry, Broga routine won’t relax your mind and race your heart, nothing will! So if you’re looking for a challenging workout and you absolutely love yoga, get the Broga. Whether you want to lose weight, gain strength or increase flexibility, the Broga has it all laid out for you!

Gym Etiquette – For Those Who Love To Exercise!

Don’t be that one annoying person everyone dislikes. Here’s a list of simple common-sense rules for gym etiquette that you should religiously follow in order to prevent yourself from being the laughing stock of the gym you attend.

  • Train well without talking too much. Talk only when required.
  • Don’t eat or drink coffee in the gym. Remember you’re there to train.
  • Don’t pass comments when people are working out. It’s impolite to comment without being asked!
  • Wear appropriate working outfits without exposing yourself in any way.
  • Its gym, not Starbucks, so leave your makeup and designer “workout” outfit at home!
  • Wear comfortable clothing, something that will not rip when you bend!
  • Watch your language at all times.
  • Help IF asked and be positive towards others.
  • Clean off your sweat from the machine you used. Don’t leave it for others to do that for you!
  • Yes the gym has mirrors but they aren’t there for you to do your makeup or look at others!
  • Concentrate on YOUR workout and not what others are doing.
  • When you need to use the changing room, be quick. Remember, many others wait.
  • Share equipment, remember sharing is caring!
  • Don’t get in the way of others while they workout, you may get hurt.
  • Turn off your cell; this definitely disturbs others who’re looking to workout peacefully.
  • Respect others if you want to be respected.
  • If you like to train with music, then get earplugs. Best not to annoy anyone if you’re a metal head!
  • When you’ve finished using equipment, make sure you place them back in their places. You definitely don’t want people to break their bones by tripping on a dumbbell!
  • Don’t show off. Be reasonable and carry weight you can manage.
  • Be yourself, don’t imitate anyone.

Accurate Pregnancy Tests from Home

Whenever you have noticed that, you are starting to feel the beginning effects of pregnancy, an at home pregnancy test might be in order. However, there are things to think before, during, and after taking the pregnancy test.

Before

There are several important things that a person needs to know before using a pregnancy test.

  1. You want to ensure that you do not test yourself too soon. Many women believe that they know their cycle; however, that is not always true. The cycle changes a little each month. Knowing this can stop the upset from false results.
  2. Read instructions. This can be very important. You are not an expert, each time you take tests things can change a bit. In addition, each brand has different instructions. The instructions can make a difference between false results and true results.

During

During a test does not always mean while you are peeing on the stick. Getting all the paraphernalia ready can make all the difference while taking your test. Rushing does not help you or your emotional state.

  • Testing at the right time. Some believe that you receive the best results from the first pee of the morning. The reason for this is based on the concentration that is within that urine sample. The concentration is important; however, the morning is not the only time that it is available.
    • Here is one option: Learning your test results first thing in the morning can taint your entire day, so one option is to test yourself in the evening. This can be accomplished by creating the right situation. First, you will want to only drink water for the entire day, this can help to ensure a pure test. Second, you will want to limit your salt intake as that can sometimes mess with test answers. Finally, drink nothing after noon and wait six hours, or more, without peeing.
  • Capturing urine is important. It is important to know alternatives to collecting your urine so that you obtain enough to get accurate results. Collecting urine in a cup can be the best option, as holding the stick in your urine stream.

After

Having confidence over the results can change your whole attitude. Be confident in knowing the chances of false results based on medications that you are taking. It can also be a good idea to take the tests a few times ensuring your test results.

If you have, any concern on how to take the pregnancy test or unable to understand the results contact your health care provider. They have the ability to give you a urine test; however, the doctor has other ways to determine if you are pregnant.
