Following the conviction of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, monuments of George Floyd have sprouted around the country. They have, however, not always been received with reverence.
The George Floyd monument in New York City’s Union Square had just been installed for 48 hours when it was damaged.
The NYPD shared video of a man surrounding the monument before spraying it with gray paint. He then slid away on his skateboard.
This statue is next to that of former civil rights leader and American politician John Lewis and Breonna Taylor, the young lady killed by Kentucky police in her home in March.
The artist, Chris Carnabuci, titled the installation #seeinjustice and picked Union Square since it was the site of numerous rallies against racial inequality last summer.
