The NFL announced Tuesday morning that Hall of Fame coach turned broadcaster John Madden, whose passionate yells mixed with straightforward explanations provided a weekly soundtrack to NFL games for three decades, had died. He was 85 years old.
Madden coached the rebellious Oakland Raiders to a 103-32-7 regular-season record and led his club to a Super Bowl win after the 1976 season. However, a dread of flying contributed to his early departure from coaching.
