Law Abiding Citizen 2 Is Happening with Original Writer, Gerard Butler to Produce

Law Abiding Citizen is receiving a sequel after more than a decade. The action thriller, directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Kurt Wimmer, was released in theaters in 2009.

The film, starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, portrays a man who takes the law into his own hands after the criminal justice system fails to adequately punish the murderer of his family. Even though the picture received mixed reviews, it was a box office success.

According to Deadline, Law Abiding Citizen 2 is currently officially in the works. Butler, who was also a producer on the first film, is co-producing the sequel with returning producers Wimmer, Lucas Foster, and Alan Siegel.

Rob Paris and Mike Witherill of Rivulet Films are also producing. Tristen Tuckfield and Jillian Apfelbaum of Village Roadshow Pictures are executive producers.

Although no director has been appointed, and it is unclear whether Gray will return to the director’s chair, Wimmer is writing the script for the sequel.

No narrative specifics have been provided, and it’s unclear whether Foxx or any of the other performers from the first film will reprise their roles. However, a statement from the directors hints the return of characters from the previous film.

“I am delighted to partner with Rob, Mike, and Village Roadshow Pictures, together with my frequent creative partner Kurt Wimmer, to revisit these great characters and this compelling topic which seems even more relevant today than when we made the original film. We’re going to blow your mind… again,” Foster said.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Rivulet on the sequel to Law Abiding Citizen,” noted Tuckfield and Apfelbaum. “It’s a title that exemplifies the scope and breadth of the Vine library. Collaborating closely with Kurt and Lucas will lend the creative authenticity necessary to make a film worthy of its predecessor.”
