Netflix Developing Ghostbusters Series

According to Variety, Netflix is working on a new Ghostbusters animated series. Ghost Corp Inc., in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, is executive producing the series with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenen.

The most current Ghostbusters film, Ghostbuster: Afterlife, was co-written by Reitman and directed by Reitman. For the time being, Netflix is keeping story specifics private, and the program does not yet have a writer attached.

Netflix and Columbia Pictures’ Ghost Corps Inc. will collaborate on the show’s production. The announcement coincides with the annual Ghosbutsers Day event, which marks the current anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film.

If it is released, this Ghostbusters cartoon will be the third based on the original movie from the 1980s. The first film, The Real Ghostbusters, was released in 1986.

Over 140 episodes broadcast until 1991, it followed the exploits of the original Ghostbusters protagonists. In 1997, Egon Spengler led a fresh new ensemble of characters in Extreme Ghostbusters for 40 episodes.

Ghostbusters began with the 1984 film directed by Jason Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman. Star Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis co-wrote the film. Ghostbusters 2 followed in 1989, featuring the same cast and creators. Paul Feig rebooted the franchise in 2016’s Ghostbusters (now also known as Ghostbusters: Answer the Call) featuring an entirely new cast. Ghostbusters: Afterlife got in on the legacy sequel trend, introducing a new generation of Ghostbusters related to the original cast. It grossed $200 million worldwide at the box office.
