Drew Barrymore hasn’t been considered controversial in a long time, but the wild child-turned-daytime talk show presenter is facing backlash from some of her closest admirers after her remarks regarding Johnny Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard.
Many believed her statements regarding the trial were dismissive of the subject of male domestic abuse, despite the fact that public opinion has been overwhelmingly supportive of Depp. The backlash became so intense that the 47-year-old was forced to issue a hurried apology on her Instagram account, which has nearly 16 million followers.
Variety reported on the apology, in which the Charlie’s Angels star said she was seeking to make the controversy a “teachable moment” about how she should conduct herself in the future. “It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” Drew Barrymore says in the video. “All I want to do is be a good person. I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person and I very much appreciate the depth of this and I will grow and change from it…And I thank everyone helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you.”
