Trump Celebrates By Taking Credit for Coronavirus Vaccine Progress

In typical fashion, President Trump said on Friday that the U.S. was “way ahead on vaccines” just after Pfizer and collaborator BioNTech SE revealed clinical trial results showing that their coronavirus vaccination was 95% successful with no significant adverse effects on either of the trial participants.

“You wouldn’t have a vaccine if it weren’t for me for another four years,” Trump said at a news conference, referring to Operation Warp Speed—through which the government orchestrated and invested in rapid vaccine growth.

Moderna revealed earlier this week that its vaccine candidate was just short of 95% and it was anticipated that the firm would shortly apply for emergency usage authorization in the very near future. Pfizer and BioNTech SE announced that they had applied for emergency use on Friday.

More than 251,000 Americans have died of the coronavirus as of early Saturday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
