Florida educators tied mask to disabled student’s face for 6 weeks without parents’ consent

A Florida man is accusing educators at his daughter’s primary school of forcing his Down syndrome daughter to wear a mask tied to her head for six weeks.

Sofia Steele, Jeffery Steele’s daughter, is nonverbal and has an enormous tongue. Sofia walked off the school bus on Oct. 7 with a mask moist from her spit and fastened to her head with a thin, nylon string, according to Steele, but she did not depart for school that day or any day previously.

Sofia has an individual education plan (IEP), and instructors are required to notify parents of any changes to their children’s IEPs, according to Steele. However, the school never notified him or his wife that Sofia would be required to wear a mask, and no one sought the parents for permission to tie it to her face throughout the school day.
