A surgeon in India will attempt to implant a womb into a trans woman who was born a man in order to get them pregnant.
The dangerous surgery will include harvesting reproductive organs from a deceased donor or a patient who has transitioned the other way and had theirs removed.
There has only been one reported incidence of a womb being implanted into a trans woman in the past and she died from complications just months later.
Because trans women lack a properly functional ******, they would require IVF and a C-section.
Dr Narendra Kaushik, who operates a gender reassignment facility in New Delhi, has stated that he is “very, very hopeful” that the treatment would be successful.
‘Every transgender woman wants to be as female as possible — and that includes being a mother,’ he is quoted as saying in The Mirror.
‘The way towards this is with a uterine transplant, the same as a kidney or any other transplant. This is the future. We cannot predict exactly when this will happen but it will happen very soon.’
The surgeon has not revealed the recipient or given a timetable for the surgery, but he added: ‘We have our plans and we are very very optimistic about this.’
